HEART EXPANSION YOGA
Heart expansion yoga invites courage and vulnerability into your practice and heart space. It is often described as chest-opening and back-bending postures, it actually goes so much deeper than that.
“Work from your heart, not your brain to create harmony” – BKS Iyengar
Heart expansion also known as heart opening yoga can happen through posture, breath, or meditation and not only effects the physical structure of the chest – layers of tissue, bone and muscle where the heart resides, but also your energetic and emotional capacity for love, gratitude, acceptance. The heart chakra, or anahata chakra, symbolizes the energy source for compassion and love for yourself and others.
In yoga, lots of emphasis is placed on opening the heart. In yoga philosophy, heart expansion poses can affect your physical, mental, and emotional state. Some say that if you improve your posture, your attitude will follow and flow through many areas of your life. We do this by moving attention to your chest and heart space where you give and receive love.
With heart expansion, you may feel a release of upset emotions, as well as a flood of joyful emotions. The effects can be immediate and also long-term. Common heart-expansion postures include: cobra pose, upward-dog, camel pose, boat pose, bridge pose, fish pose, and dancers pose just to name a few.
Just as you can practice heart expansion in your thoughts and emotions, you can also experience opening the heart space in your physical body.
Physically, heart openers can combat our natural posture of rounded shoulders and a hunched spine, which can lead to restriction to your normal range of motion. As we get older we can experience a rounding of the spine which can restrict back movement. You may also feel pain traveling down your spine. Heart expansion postures also open the pathways needed for energy to flow freely through the chakras.
Yoga also builds cardiovascular health, increases lung capacity, respiratory function and heart rate. It also boosts blood circulation, builds muscles and decreases inflammation. By stepping onto your mat you are not only encouraging heart expansion but improving your heart health too!
